When Compassion Does More Harm than Good

We featured the article “Don’t Be Nice; Be Helpful” which stressed the importance of giving honest feedback. We all know someone who has a quirk or two that bothers other people but we choose not to tell the individual because we don’t want to be mean. I think of people I see with mascara on their upper eye area or toilet paper on their shoe. While I don’t want to embarrass the individual by pointing out their flaw, it is better than walking around all day like that and letting people stare. The same courtesy should be utilized in the business world. We may think we are saving the person’s feelings but we are actually hurting them. If you see a problem, then someone else does too. This doesn’t mean you have to point out every little thing or reveal someone’s flaw in a less than courteous manner. It does mean you have a responsibility to give CONSTRUCTIVE criticism when it can help someone improve their performance!

What do you think? Have you ever been in a similar situation? How would you handle such a situation? Have you ever been the recipient of some constructive criticism?
